How to Do It Yourself for the Greenest Bermudagrass on Your Street!
Your lawncare service will come with big heavy standing mowers and leave ruts and channels all over your lawn if it’s not healthy or the soil is moist. This makes a bumpy nasty lawn to walk through. Ask you lawncare service to only use push mowers. They don’t like using them because its more effort to use and takes slightly longer but they won’t damage your lawn this way.
If you mow yourself, do not get a gas mower or electric push mower. Instead, get a reel mower that uses no gas or electricity. They are silent so you can use them early morning or late in the evening during cool hours without bothering your neighbors. No exhaust fumes either. They have a cylinder drum of blades that rotate as you push them. Added bonus they are super cheap. They are the best for bermudagrass because they are not heavy and will never cause damage to your lawn. Even on wet soil you can push it around and cut grass pretty cleanly like you were cutting your lawn with a pair of sharp scissors. There are very premium gas-powered reel mowers with many bells and whistles but are much more expensive and I have never used one before. The manual reel mower I use and works great for me is the Fiskars StaySharp Max Reel Mower.
The reason why I love this one is that you can get it cutting down to .5″ which is a great height for bermudagrass in the growing months. The StaySharp Max Reel mower is advertised to do between 1″ and 4″ by default but in reality, can get down to 1.25″. You need to modify it with a Dremel tool in order to get down to .5″ for the really low cut.
