February 1 #
  • Grass is dormant.  Don’t do anything for the grass and soil (winterizer fertilizer, aeration, etc) as you’re wasting money/time on sleeping grass. You only need to treat to prevent weeds later this month.
February 15 #
  • Put down 1st light treatment of Barricade DG granular pre-emergent for the crabgrass, clover, dandelion, and other weed seeds if we start to have warm fronts begin early, usually around Feb 15 to end of month is when this happens.  One 18 lb bag of this can do 5,800 sq ft at a regular rate but remember you are doing a light spread of this.  So if you have an average size 4,500 sq ft. lawn this is all you need right now.  You can also choose to buy the larger 50 lb bag if you can store it in a cool dry place. You can also use Quali-Pro Prodiamine 65 WDG or Dimension 2EW if you want easy-to-store bottles that you spray as a liquid pre-emergent.
  • If you do have existing weeds coming up because you didn’t put down a pre-emergent at the right time previously, don’t worry you can use a bermudagrass friendly post-emergent to kill them off without harming the bermudagrass.  Tenacity herbicide is very popular for Bermuda grass weed control but also extremely pricey.  It is more of a specialty weed killer.  Southern Ag Amine 24-D Weed Killer is just as effective killing all the popular Bermuda grass weeds we face in Texas at a fraction of the cost.  Do not buy a surfactant to go with this as it will be a waste of money.  It is true that many weeds are hydrophobic so liquids bead on them and don’t cling. You can just mix a little bit of Dawn dish soap into your sprayer after mixing your solution which will act just like a surfactant as you spray and breaks the water tension allowing the herbicide to stick to the blades of the weeds.  A 32 oz bottle (1 quart) diluted can cover up to 2 acres (87,120 sq ft) so this will last you many seasons.  Spot treat your weeds only with this.  Dilute at 2 oz. per gallon of water and a teaspoon of dish soap and test on a few test weeds on your lawn to monitor how long it takes to work at that dilution before spraying other weeds later.  Ensure you are wearing proper PPE (gloves, goggles, and rubber boots) as it’s a very strong product.  Though it’s safe on bermudagrass do not spray your whole lawn with it as it can slow bermudagrass growth.
  • Another slightly more expensive option that works well is BioAdvanced (Bayer Advanced) 704140 All-In-One Lawn Weed and Crabgrass Killer Garden Herbicide, 32-Ounce.  It contains the same “2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2, 4-D)” chemical as the active ingredient. It may seem inexpensive at first glance but can only cover up to 6,250 sq ft so you are better off getting the 2,4-D Amine instead.
