What about dog urine grass burns?

Dog urine can cause grass burns very easily. Grass loves nitrogen to be green but urine has too much nitrogen in a concentrated area all at once. Sunlight hitting a pee spot will burn the grass blades even faster. It’s a nitrogen overdose. The larger the dog, the more urine that goes down at once so bigger burn spots. Spray down where you have seen a pet urinate with a garden hose to help dispel the nitrogen concentration. If you have a Rachio there are ways to hook it up to smart home buttons inside your home or voice assistants like Amazon Echo to easily trigger in-ground sprinklers for a few minutes every time your dog goes out to pee. Bermuda grass is a fast creeping grass so any damage will be covered very quickly if it’s a healthy lawn. Don’t take it out on your pets for doing something natural.

There are chews you can give your dog to reduce the nitrogen content in their urine like the PetHonesty GrassGreen Grass Burn Spot Chews for Dogs, FurroLandia Natural Grass Saver for Dogs, or Zesty Paws Stay Green Bites for Dogs but I have not tried any of these.

I am not much of a believer in changing your dog’s diet. It is better to change their behavior by training them to pee in a specific spot. You will want to build a small dog run or potty area in your backyard. Dig out the grass, lay down weed block fabric, large river rock, weed block fabric over that, pea gravel, and then finally non-toxic artificial grass on top that is tacked down into the ground using long lawn staples. The one I prefer because you don’t have to worry about toxicity or carcinogens being released from the heat is the MegaGrass MegaPet artificial grass that is cut to the specific size you need. Get it as small or as large as you need. You can even trim it down to the exact size you need once you get it as well if you have an odd shape to fill. Once you have trained your dog to pee on the artificial grass which will drain down through the gravel, you will no longer have burn spots in the bermudagrass anymore.

Lowes sells SYNLawn which makes artificial grass for pets as well but it’s a pain to order since they don’t keep it in stock in the stores and is a special order item.  Plus it’s not cut to the exact sizes you need.  It starts out at 15 ft wide!  Unless you have a very large dog run to fill, you are better off buying the MegaGrass cut to the exact measurements you need and have it show up at your door in a few days.

Once you get your artificial turf, you should also brush in an infill material that can do odor control. The urine forms ammonia gas which causes odors and you need something that can absorb it before the odors happen. ZeoFill Infill Granules for Artificial Grass which is made from Clinoptilolite Zeolite, a naturally occurring volcanic ash, is one of the best organic methods for odor control. One bag is all you need and it does not require reapplication. You can read more about it in ZeoFill’s FAQ on their website.

If you need to cleanse the area of any bacteria the best option is Simple Green Outdoor Odor Eliminator for Pets, Dogs, Ideal for Artificial Grass & Patio. It comes as a 32 oz hose-end sprayer & has a 1 Gallon refill.
