  • 1st light treatment of PGF Balanced 10-10-10 quick-release fertilizer ideally last week of October around Halloween time when the temperatures start dipping into the high 70s. This will act as your “winterizer fertilizer”. DO NOT use PGF Complete 16-4-8 you have been using all year because it is a slow-release fertilizer and will sit there trying to feed your lawn when it is trying to be dormant for Winter when the temperatures are regularly in the 70s in November. You should have a green lawn through Thanksgiving this way. Don’t wait until mid-November to lay this down as by then the temperatures will be getting much cooler. If you only have cheap 10-10-10 or 13-13-13 all-purpose fertilizer that is okay to use as well but the particles on those are typically much larger and don’t give you as good a spread as PGF Balanced will. In addition to the small particle size that distributes well, PGF Balanced will also include micronutrients and iron that the regular 10-10-10 or 13-13-13 from Home Depot and Lowes do not have. Those cheap bags are about 33 lbs to 40 lbs and PGF Balanced is 18 lbs. All this quick-release fertilizer will stop feeding within 30 days so right at the end of November when we dip into the high 60’s for the first time this will help your grass ease into dormancy.
